This multi-disciplinary, $2.6 million project involved sampling and analysis of terrestrial and marine water quality, assessment and modeling of coastal engineering process, assessment of marine toxicology, identification and evaluation of socioeconomic issues, economic impact assessment and a public participation program.
Six pilot projects involving shoreline protection, beach regeneration and water quality enhancement were also implemented to assess remedial measures to address the fundamental shoreline problems.
These activities were undertaken to better define the multifaceted environmental problems along the west and south coastlines to develop programs to protect and enhance the beaches, coral reefs and marine environment.
The resulting management plan developed included recommendations for engineered coastal measures, land use controls, water quality remediation, restoration of marine habitat, additional research needs, educational programs and a framework for implementation.
