Scope of Services

Delcan and SSI were retained to provide an overall ITS design for the City of Johannesburg. In accordance with the design; specifications and tender documents were prepared for the ITS equipment. The project scope also included assistance during tendering and construction of these components.

ATMS Software supplied: Traffic Signal Management System (TSMS), Traffic Control and Surveillance System (TCSS) and Advance Traveling Information System (ATIS). Specifications and tender documents to enable the city to procure a fleet management system for a bus rapid transport network and an integrated electronic fare system were also prepared. Delcan was responsible for overall system integration and testing; and training of JRA personnel.

Project Description

South Africa hosts the 2010 FIFA World Cup which is considered to be the world’s premier sporting event. In preparation for the influx of visitors expected, an upgrade to the local transportation network has become a priority. Among other initiatives, the City of Johannesburg will implement a bus rapid transport system and an Intelligent Transportation System.

Delcan’s ITS solutions will provide transport vehicle priority at traffic intersections, monitor and control up to 1,600 intersections in the city, monitor and control the city’s urban motorways and provide reliable transport information to motorists and transport users through JRA’s web portal.

Advanced features of the solutions offered include: Enhanced Adaptive Signal Control and network monitoring through the collection of data from probe vehicles using cellular and
GPS data.
